Job Description

This is a counseling position with primary duties centering on continual improvement of their Clients’ recovery program and ensuring the necessary assessment data for diagnosis and treatment is obtained. The Counselor communicates with other team members on an on-going basis in that regard.

Detailed Description of Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Counselor include but are not limited to:


  1. Utilize provided program material, acquiring additional material as may be required, and contemporary counseling methods, including motivational interviewing;
  2. Organize and maintain, updating as needed, the program library;
  3. Conduct initial screening, intake, assessment, utilizing the ASAM Criteria, of new entrants;
  4. Ensure Clients in his/her caseload receive proper and complete program orientation;
  5. Coordinate services for Clients in his/her caseload;
  6. Develop Client-centered Treatment Plans and ensure Client Treatment Plan implementation;
  7. Provide on-going encouragement to Clients that promotes participation in discussion of his/her plans, goals, and status;
  8. Involve Client family or legal guardian, when applicable or permitted;
  9. Perform on-going Client Charting;
  10. Create and maintain proper record keeping of all services provided, including documentation of Client progress in treatment reflecting attendance, participation, and motivation;
  11. Perform Client evaluations and program planning;
  12. Communicating Client progress information to the appropriate persons/agencies as required;
  13. Comply with VOTC, Inc. Policies and Procedures and ethical Code of Conduct;
  14. Facilitate education and process group counseling.
  15. Participate in Staff training;

Client Relations

  1. One-on-one counseling session with each assigned Client as needed;
  2. Identify gaps in service provision and provide Client information on community resources available to meet his/her needs;
  3. Coordinate outside services provided to Client;
  4. Advocate, when necessary, on behalf of Client, both internally and with outside agencies;
  5. Problem solving ability that does not necessitate direct intervention from the director;
  6. Record observations of Clients and the facility and report to the director;
  7. Uphold VOTC, Inc. rules and regulations and report infractions;
  8. Maintain assigned Client caseload;
  9. Facilitate Client Discharge, and arrange for follow-up services;
  10. Monitor caseload-Clients’ program participation.
